The year 2024 has just started, but Inter is already planning for the future in the defensive department.
With the contracts of Francesco Acerbi and Stefan de Vrij expiring in 2025, Inter has begun to sound out potential options to occupy the central centre-back role in the future. The veteran Italian has been Simone Inzaghi’s first choice, while the Dutch international is a quality rotation option and has re-found form over the past two seasons.
2025 is on the horizon and according to Italian outlet TuttoSport as relayed by FCInterNews, officials from the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza have drafted a shortlist of names for that central defender spot following the potential departures of Inter’s current options.
The article begins by outlining that Inter had no financial restrictions, the club would “rush” to Alessandro Buongiorno of Torino or Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini “without hesitation”, but an operation for either of these players would prove difficult due to values exceeding €40M. Other expensive options include Lille’s 18-year-old Leny Yoro, who has interest from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, as well as Ajax’s 17-year-old Jorrel Hato, although the teenage Dutch defender is reportedly close to Arsenal.
Inter is set to monitor the return of Torino and Netherlands defender Perr Schuurs, who suffered a major injury in October of 2023 and has been ruled out for the season. The 24-year-old has been on Inter’s list for quite some time and was even an option to replace Milan Škriniar previously.
Finally, two potential free agents, of course. Jonathan Tah, the 28-year-old German defender, who has been a cornerstone of Xabi Alonso’s undefeated Bayer Leverkusen side, is said to be a player to keep an eye on in the future. Tah has a contract expiring in 2025, which would coincide with the timeframe in which Inter is planning. Secondly, Danilho Doekhi. The 25-year-old Dutch defender has been linked with Inter in the past and also has a contract expiring in 2025.
