After both teams won their semi-final matchups by a score of 3-0, Inter and Napoli will face off in the Supercoppa Italiana final on Monday, January 22, 2024.

So much for “different” games, right? Despite a new format of the Supercoppa Italiana introduced this season, the holder of the 2022-2023 Coppa Italia will face the winner of the 2022-2023 Scudetto- the exact match that the Supercoppa has been for years before the format was changed.

Inter and Napoli both thrashed their opponents, Lazio and Fiorentina respectively, by a score of 3-0 in their semi-final matches late last week. In hindsight, it now looks like the semi-finals were a “waste” of an extra game thrown into the 4 teams’ schedules. Regardless, it gave football fans another game to watch, as well as Saudi Arabian fans a chance to watch their teams live in their home country, even if they may not have been on the winning side.

The final match has already occurred this season in Serie A. Inter travelled to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona and blew the reigning champions out of the water- a dominant 3-0 win from the visitors with goals from Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Nicolò Barella and Marcus Thuram. Clearly, it was not Napoli’s day and it hasn’t quite been Napoli’s season. The Scudetto holders find themselves in ninth place in Serie A at the time of writing, having undergone a change in manager already and losing Victor Osimhen to represent Nigeria at AFCON. Despite this, Napoli have won back-to-back matches for the first time in December and will look to make that three on the bounce for the first time across competitive matches this season.

Inter, on the other hand, has come to win. Although many fans have figured that this trophy is “meaningless”, and that the club has other priorities to focus on, Simone Inzaghi and the players have made it abundantly clear that they want to win the Supercoppa for the third time in a row and will do everything to make this happen. While it may be true that there are greater priorities this season, such as the Scudetto, the Supercoppa is still a major trophy and the club’s “first objective this season”, as manager Inzaghi has stated.

No matter which way it goes, fans are in for a treat of a match on Monday.

According to SkySport Italy, Napoli is set to line up as follows (3-4-3): Gollini; Di Lorenzo, Rrahmani, Juan Jesus; Mazzocchi, Cajuste, Lobotka, Mario Rui; Politano, Simeone, Kvaratskhelia.

According to SkySport Italia, Inter is set to line up as follows (3-5-2): Sommer; Pavard, de Vrij, Acerbi; Darmian, Barella, Çalhanoğlu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Lautaro Martínez. Alessandro Bastoni is struggling with muscle soreness in his thigh and is unlikely to feature- de Vrij will start in the centre of the back-three with Acerbi starting in place of Bastoni.

Napoli-Inter in the Supercoppa Italiana Final is set to kick off on Monday, January 22 at 20:00 CET / 14:00 EST.
