All the latest news has been surrounding Lautaro Martínez and what appears to be an imminent contract extension with Inter. The most recent news surrounding the club and its contract extension plans concerns its vice-captain this time: Nicolò Barella.
According to Italian outlet, FCInter1908, the club has officially opened talks with Nicolò Barella to extend his contract. Over the past months, Inter has worked to extend the contracts of their key players. Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Federico Dimarco and Matteo Darmian all had their contracts extended and officially announced in December of 2023, Lautaro Martínez has been the subject of speculation (although the forward himself has continuously confirmed that both parties are happy and that there is no rush) and now, it seems that it is Barella’s turn.
The report claims that Inter Sporting Director, Piero Ausilio, met with the entourage of the Italian midfielder recently during the club’s trip to Saudi Arabia for the Supercoppa Italiana. The meeting was described as “peaceful” and it seems that both parties want to continue together, with Barella himself being a pillar of this current Inter side and one of its most important figures.
Barella, who joined Inter in 2019 from Cagliari, penned his current deal with the club in 2021. Being one of the world’s most valuable and most coveted midfielders, Inter is looking to lock the Cagliari native down to a new deal as soon as possible- despite his current contract being valid until 2026.
Both Barella and Lautaro need to stay at Inter, we have already sold many valuable players because of Suning financial dilemma, Suning needs to either fix their financial issues or sell the majority share instead of every season selling two or three top players.
This is positive to hear. Between Frattesi coming in this summer, Mkhi renewing his contract, and more recently the rumors of a done deal with Zielinski for next summer, the signs seemed to point to Barella being the next big summer sale.
While our midfield is among the strongest in Europe now, Barella’s quality is a big part of that. Frattesi and Asllani are promising, but neither has the kind of quality that Barella has, and it is a noticeable drop off when we see someone else playing in his place.
I really hope we can hold on to Barella.
