After a busy period for the club, discussions have resumed between Inter and its captain’s entourage over a contract renewal.

Lautaro Martínez has far and away been Serie A’s best player this season, leading the league scoring chart with 19 goals- seven more than his next closest competitor (Juventus forward Dušan Vlahović with 12 goals).

Towards the end of 2023, Inter began discussing with the forward and his entourage to plan a contract extension. The club has been working on many renewals as of late, with Matteo Darmian, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Federico Dimarco all extending their stays in late December, while also working on the extensions of Lautaro Martínez and Nicolò Barella. Following a busy December-January period, including the Supercoppa Italiana and important league matches, discussions between Lautaro and Inter had slowed down.

According to a report in today’s edition of Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, talks are back underway. Inter’s number 10 is asking for a salary of €10M including bonuses, while the Nerazzurri have offered €8M plus bonuses. Clearly, there is a decent gap between the ask and the offer- but the saving grace is that Lautaro’s current contract runs until 2026…there is no rush.

Inter will travel to Madrid in March to face Atlético Madrid in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16. It is assumed that then, Inter will meet face-to-face with the agent representing Lautaro Martínez, Alejandro Camaño, as his agency is based in Madrid.

It has been reported on numerous occasions that both parties want to continue together and it is a matter of “when”, rather than “if” the contract renewal will be agreed upon.
